Health warning - Blackberry picking is addictive
Posted by Kate under: Fruit & Vegetables; Smallholding .
I have to admit that picking wild blackberries seems to have become addictive, so much so that neighbours have pulled over and offered me a lifts home presumably assuming, only a mad woman would take the long route home from school to walk along hedgerows in the rain. Maybe I am a little mad, but just as I think “thats a good amount and maybe it’s time to go home”, I spot another glut and before I know it I’ve been out for hours and the ponies are wanting to know where I’ve been.
Seriously though, the children and I have managed to collect so many we’ve sold a good number of punnets as well as making blackberry gin, blackberry crumbles, blackberry cakes and blackberry cordial. Sloes seem to be less abundant for some reason, but we have managed 2 litres of sloe gin.
Damsons have been ridiculous this year in their abundance, so much so you can’t seem to give them away, so we made jam and sold that instead.
