Fingers-crossed

Posted by Richard under: Hay; Smallholding .

It looks as if we will finally get the hay in next week. The local farmer (who seems to do all the hay cuts around here) paid us a visit yesterday - and he reckons the bottom field looks the best he has seen it - hardly any docks or thistles and a good mix of different grasses and clover all ready for cutting. The weekend weather is still dodgy, but there is high pressure on the way next week which should give us 4 or 5 days of decent sunshine. This time next week we could have 100 or so small square bales tucked up in the barn (and probably part of the feed store as well).  Fingers-crossed.

It will be good to get an extra field back for grazing - but the juggling of sheep and ponies across the remaining paddocks will have been worth it if we get 2 winters worth of hay out of a pretty wet summer.

The other bonus is that getting the hay in is a time-honoured excuse for a few drinks!!
